Oklahoma Financial Literacy Legislation & Educational Stats

How many students resided in the Sooner State during the 2014-2015 academic year? A total of 688,511, according to the CCD (Common Core of Data, at the U.S. DOE). This number is about 70% of the national average of 986,521. Further, Oklahoma had 1,811 total schools, very close to the national average (1,972); and 42,073 teachers (61,418 U.S. average).

House Bill 1268, signed by the Oklahoma governor in May 2015, established an alternative method for some students to demonstrate adequate financial knowledge and required the state Department of Education to provide certain resources and materials. The bill states that financial literacy instruction will include, but is not limited to, “understanding interest, credit card debt, and online commerce; rights and responsibilities of renting or buying a home; savings and investing; planning for retirement; banking and financial services;” and several other concepts (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2015).
